Viken lies at the southern end of the peninsula, on the Öresund about 18 km by road north of Helsingborg, with Denmark in view across the water.

The old village keeps its medieval street pattern, and many half-timbered houses survive from the 1600s and 1700s. In the 1800s Viken became a seafaring village whose sailing ships traded across the world's oceans; the small maritime museum at the harbor tells that story through some 1,500 objects, photos and documents. The Sophiamöllan windmill from 1838 still runs on summer weekends, and Paul Jönska gården is a preserved skipper's farmstead from around 1880.

Viken's sandy beach is lined with small, brightly painted bathing huts. South of the village, the Domsten–Viken nature reserve protects a coastal heath that was once part of Kulla fälad, the common grazing land. The village has grocery stores, restaurants and a bakery, and buses run often to both Helsingborg and Höganäs, so it works well as a base.
